"It's the light they believe kills.
We drink and load again, let them crawl
for all they're worth into the dakrness we're headed for."
exerpt from Shooting Rats at the Bibb County Dump.
by David Bottoms.
To me, this poem symbolizes the superiority man feels toward other creatures. Granted, the "other creatures" mentioned were rats in a dump, good only for drunken amusement, apparently. I find the entertainment of rat shooting rather repulsive, but this blog isn't about advocating animal rights. It's about the poem, which also symbolizes the need some people feel to escape from themselves. Alcohol, being the method, in this case. I believe David Bottoms used the rats metaphorically as humans. In the excerpt above, i think the author is stating that loading again means facing a brand new day, not knowing what's in store, and just waiting for the day that has no tomorrow.
i could be wrong.
that's just my interpretation of it.
SAVE THE RATS.

Oh, I'm pretty sure, that since this blog thing is in part about our response, it can be as much about animal rights as we desire:)

I agree with mellow german, it is our own blog and we can practically write what we want. So, go ahead and preach about animal rights...I'll support you. And this poem definitely spells out escape for those who are confined. It's sort of like Bottoms is hoping we catch the drift, that he's trying to make us see that humans are confined, afraid to let anyone see who we are, and that we need to find a way to get out and show ourselves. Prove that we can stand what the new days will bring.
